Kebeyo Chen: Circle of the Universe

30 June - 15 July 2022
As Kebeyo's first exhibition in Hong Kong, this series selects paintings and sculptures created during 2019-2022. The growing braids is her language to connect everything, including dimensional space, life and real objects.

Everything runs in contradiction. It can be opposite or complementary, like light blending with darkness, softness wrapped up by hardness and enthusiasm shuttling calmly. They conflict with but at the same time supplement each other. When fiery red meets deep blue and hard shell encounters soft inner, magic happen. All wonderful things are as splendid as the infinitely growing and blooming life, and all opposing things are connected by the extending braids. This is the underlying genetic logic of life, which projects images of inspiration through the eyes. It goes round and round, changing from a circle and remaining a circle.

This exhibition is about Kebeyo's “Relation”series of works created since 2019. As her first exhibition in Hong Kong, this series selects paintings and sculptures created during 2019-2022. The growing braids is her language to connect everything, including dimensional space, life and real objects. With her unique way of thinking, she takes things that are contradictory or go to the extreme and she brings balance to them, and makes them inclusive. Kebeyo believes that the expression of language is limited, therefore she covers all the mouths in her artworks to demonstrate her inspiration through the eyes. As she said: as the interdependence of objects is defined, all things change or will be changed. Within these changes, the relationships between objects are constantly being redefined. We exist within the relationships between multi-dimensional spaces. From singular man-to-man relations to multiplex man-to-man relations. From man-to-object relations to object-to-object relations, from internal to external connections. Let's explore how the internal and external touch, collide and reconcile, let it expand and deepen. To see a new narration of contradictions combining.
